I’m a fan of simple hacks that make a big difference, especially those that affect my overall mood, making me happier and more productive! Most people believe that they’ll be happy at some later date or that there is no such thing as non-chemical mood boosters. Like when they make more money, find their true love, or lose weight. The truth is that happiness occurs before success, not the other way around. Happy people (also called the chronically happy), those who experience a preponderance of positive emotions, tend to be successful across many areas of their life. They demonstrate superior mental and physical health partly because positivity leads them to think, feel, and act in ways that promote resource building and goal achievement. As a result, they make more money, get more promotions, live longer, and have stronger relationships. So how, then, do we become happy?
Genetics, Circumstances & Habits
Our happiness level is determined by three factors: genetics, life circumstances, and habits/behaviors. Here’s the most interesting part—genetics accounts for 50%, sort of a baseline level, while life circumstances account for only 10%. That is, our health, our wealth, all those conveniences we enjoy aren’t really mood boosters. The other 40% is based on our habits and our behaviors—the activities we choose to participate in regularly.
Shockingly to many, that means we literally have the ability to alter our happiness level, even when we are broke or sick! As with anything, though, this requires establishing new habits and new connections in our brains. How we choose to view the world, what we focus on, how we react to people and situations—all these things impact our brain patterns and establish grooves focused on either negativity or positivity. Since we are wired to protect our survival, we are more likely to identify threats and remember negative events. Savoring positive moments and experiences requires intention.
That Sounds Hard
I have some good news: it’s not too hard. The easiest way to change how we view the world is by checking out Positive Prime. By watching just three minutes daily of Positive Prime’s carefully curated images and positive audio-visual presentations, you can increase your baseline happiness. The science actually backs it up!
Accounts are free and use all sorts of focus areas: wealth, health, relationships, trauma, happiness, and many more mood boosters. My favorite session is “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor; his presentation is one of the most-watched TED Talks, and his book by the same name is amazing. Click here to watch it.
Of course, I like my own session “B.O.U.N.C.E. Back from Setbacks.” Log into www.PositivePrime.com, create an account, and use my referral code: surpass. I actually get credits to shop for other sessions. If you share this, you will get the same benefits, and if you watch daily, you can earn even more credits. Spread the happiness! This is one of the easiest recommendations I have for clients—seriously, mood boosters in just three minutes a day! Interested in other activities to shift your mindset and build more resilience?
